6. The Eco-Cooler
This amazing DIY air conditioning system was created by a Bangladeshi citizen named Ashis Paul and it requires no electricity whatsoever. This makes it the first air conditioning system that runs on zero electricity. Made out of a board and recycled soda bottles, this air conditioner is able to cool the internal temperature of huts up to 5 degrees Celsius, which is good because most huts are made with tin roofs that magnify the sun’s heat. The blueprints on how to create one of these are located online for the public so that everyone is able to build one of these.
5. The Blood Lamp
What would you do for the sake of having electricity? Would you be willing to cut off your own hair? What about giving up just a drop of your essential life force? That’s what Mike Thompson, the designer of the blood lamp, did when he asked himself the question “what if power came at a cost to the individual?” This is more of a statement piece on the matter of energy conservation but it really makes you think doesn’t it? So how is this possible? Thanks to one special ingredient: luminol. For those of you who watch a lot of crime shows you already know but for those of you who don’t, luminol is what forensic scientists use to identify blood. The chemical reaction occurs only when the luminol reacts with the iron in the blood. Isn’t science just so amazing these days?
4. The Immortus
The first invention on this list that runs solely on solar energy is the Immortus car that was created by the company EVX Ventures that is located in Melbourne. Thanks to solar photovoltaic paneling that’s attached to the exterior of the car and a 10killoWatt hour lithium-ion battery, the car is able to run just like any other normal vehicle. It’s also capable of traveling indefinitely at a speed of 37 miles per hour but the range the car can travel is limited by lighting exposure and as the car increases in speed. EVX hopes to start selling their environmentally friendly cars in low volumes to “maintain affordability.”
3. The Ecocapsule
This interesting pod that looks like it was ripped right out of some sci-fi movie is called the ecocapsule and it was created by Nice architects. So what this little egg-shaped contraption lets you do is live completely off the grid by harnessing a multitude of energies all at once. It runs on not only solar power but it’s also wind power and comes with a rainwater collection and filtration system. It might look incredibly small but you’d be surprised to know that the ecocapsule is able to fit two grown adults. Not only that, but all the essential amenities needed in a home such as a kitchenette, a working toilet, and a shower with hot water. The cool thing about this is that it’s super portable and flexible enough to be transported to almost anywhere in the world.
2. The LifeStraw
This amazing little device has the potential to provide millions of people in Third World countries with the opportunity of clean filtered water and it only costs around 37 US Dollars. Created and developed in Denmark back in 2005, the LifeStraw allows you to safely drink water from anywhere. Yes, from toilets to rivers the LifeStraw is capable of removing up to 99.99 percent of waterborne bacteria. Its purification pipe is so incredibly powerful that it can even get rid of parasites such as E. coli, salmonella, and much more. Just one of these LifeStraws is can filter out at least 1,000 liters of water. At the time of its invention, it was given extremely high praises and was dubbed as “one of the ten things that will change the way that we live.”
1. The Ocean Cleanup Device
This device is still just an idea but nonetheless it is a revolutionary idea that could have a monumental impact on our ocean one day. The idea was proposed by a Dutch man named Boyan Slat, who was just 19-years-old at the time that he proposed his idea. He stated that his concept would be able to clean up around 20 billion tons of plastic debris from the ocean without disturbing fish and plankton. If this ends up seeing the light of day it could possibly end up saving the lives of dozen marine animals who are prone to swallowing plastic and end up dead. The Ocean Cleanup Foundation is currently raising funds to see the fruition of this project.
